Resident Evil: Afterlife.

The Prime Focus team in London has deployed View-D™, its proprietary 2d to stereo 3d conversion process, to deliver three shots as a VFX sub-vendor for 'Resident Evil: Afterlife', the latest instalment in the cult series starring Milla Jovovich and written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.

As the deadly T-Virus spreads through the cities of the world leaving a trail of Undead victims in its wake, Alice (Milla Jovovich) continues her quest to round up survivors and hurry them to safety. A chance tip-off points them towards what they believe is the safe haven of Los Angeles, yet when they arrive the city greets them coldly with a teeming army of the Undead.

Prime Focus' View-D™ Supervisor and Stereographer Ben Murray lead the team who worked on the stereoscopic post conversion project. "Our brief was to give the shots extreme scene depth whilst ensuring the stereo was believable and technically correct," said Ben. "We used a technique called carding - which involves cleaning the background plate and placing the foreground objects on top, - and we were careful to maintain the soft edge that you get with film. Technically the job was very challenging," added Ben. "Maintaining contact points as the camera rotates 540 degrees around three primary characters was one of our main creative challenges."

For the fight sequence shots, the team had to clean plate the entire scene to create a completely new background layer. "The View-D™ process and the tools that continue to develop allow us a huge amount of control in terms of both scene depth and character depth," said Ben. "With View-D™, placement of characters in the scene depth is interactive and quick. I am particularly happy with these shots because we created not only great scene depth, but excellent internal volume with the characters."
