Directed by Jonathan Liebesman and produced by Michael Bay, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) is a summer action movie based on the franchise of the same name. TMNT is produced by Nickelodeon Movies and Michael Bay's production company Platinum Dunes, and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

The future looks grim for New York City as the evil ‘Shredder’ and his gang have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April O'Neil (Megan Fox) and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett) to save the city and unravel Shredder's diabolical plan. TMNT stars Johnny Knoxville as the voice of Leonardo, Alan Ritchson as the voice of Raphael, Noel Fisher as the voice of Michelangelo, and Jeremy Howard as the voice of Donatello.

Prime Focus World provided 3D conversion for approximately 15 minutes of the action flick, including the climactic final battle scene of the film. The majority of the conversion work utilized heavy VFX integration with VFX provider ILM. Senior Stereo Supervisor Ben Murray and View-D Producer Chad Cortvriendt led the TMNT team out of Vancouver. Of the 180 shots converted for the film 50 were completed in Vancouver, while the remaining 130 were completed by Prime Focus teams in Mumbai.

Due to the VFX-heavy nature of the sequences, the team knew that getting VFX elements broken out for the stereo teams quickly and effectively was going to be the biggest challenge. Prime Focus worked alongside ILM to develop an efficient pipeline between the two facilities which allowed the team to spend more time on the actual conversion and make the most of the short production time frame.

“Prime Focus’ ability to work with VFX elements so efficiently is one of the strongest aspects of the process,” commented Senior Stereo Supervisor Ben Murray. “So many of the ‘big’ 3D films are also incredibly VFX heavy, so it is imperative to have a solid pipeline to handle large amounts of elements in a short amount of time.”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles marks the third time this year that Prime Focus has worked with Paramount Pictures and Show Stereographer Corey Turner. The team previously contributed 80 minutes of 3D conversion for Noah, which released in March, and stereo VFX services for Transformers: Age of Extinction, which became a global blockbuster in July.

“Working with familiar clients like Corey and his team is always great,” said View-D Producer Chad Cortvriendt. “Corey always knows how to push the stereo boundary and guide us towards taking the conversion to new heights.  Working with him is always a pleasure.”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles releases in U.S. and UK theaters on August 8, 2014.
