'The Great Wall' rakes in mega $69 million opening weekend at the Chinese Box Office

The Great Wall had a terrific 478 million yuan ($69 million) debut weekend in China, including $7m in IMAX screens. Starring Matt Damon and directed by Oscar-nominee Zhang Yimou, the film registered the fourth-biggest opening weekend in China this year.

Produced on a budget of $150 million, the highest ever for a Chinese movie, The Great Wall follows a European mercenary, William Garin (Matt Damon) who is detained at the wall and later joins forces with Chinese soldiers to combat an army of mysterious monsters. The film also features some of China's most popular actors including superstar Andy Lau, Zhang Hanyu, Lu Han, Eddie Peng along with Pedro Pascal of 'Game of Thrones' fame and William Dafoe.  

‘The Great Wall’ will be coming to theaters around the world over the next few months, culminating in a February 17th release in North America.
