Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the Harry Potter spin-off by author J.K. Rowling that stars Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne, took the No. 1 spot at the U.S. box office and earned $75 million in its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo.
The film has earned $218.3 million worldwide, including $15m in IMAX, since Wednesday, putting it ahead of the $188m worldwide bow for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and the $209m worldwide debut for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
In UK the film opened at £15.33m, which was the biggest debut of any film this year, ahead of 2016’s two big superhero releases, Captain America: Civil War (debut £14.47m) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (£14.62m).
