'Avengers: Age of Ultron' US opening weekend is second largest ever (after 'Avengers')

Movies that debut over $150 million don't open every month, but when Sunday's final ticket sales came in it became clear that Avengers: Age of Ultron had hit a massive $191.3 million, making it the second biggest US opening ever - after the original Avengers, which took $207.4 million.

The film also continues to do well internationally, where it has earned $439 million to date, without even opening in China or Japan yet!

The figures assert Marvel's dominance over the domestic box office - it currently holds the top three places in the list of biggest ever domestic openings. Box Office Mojo reports that the audience was 59 percent male and 59 percent over the age of 25, and the audience awarded the film a strong 'A' CinemaScore.
