'The Martian' opens to $50m in China and crosses $500m globally

'The Martian' continues its amazing run at the box office with a $50m+ opening in China which has helped it rocket past the $500m mark globally. The late opening in China has confirmed 'The Martian' as Ridley Scott's biggest movie internationally, surpassing 2012's 'Prometheus', which took $278m according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Latest figures for the Matt Damon-starrer stand at $218.6m in the U.S. and $326.1m overseas, and it placed second internationally this last weekend behind 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2'.
