Walt Disney Pictures' Maleficent, for which Prime Focus World provided on-set stereo supervision and stereo conversion services, has flown to number 1 at the Box Office on its opening weekend.
The picture took an estimated $70 million at the domestic box office, and roughly $100 million overseas, making it the biggest ever debut for star Angelina Jolie, and a significant improvement on 2013's Oz: The Great and Powerful.
Interestingly, Maleficent was the first of the big summer movies aimed at the female audience. Maleficent's audience was 60 percent female and 51 percent over the age of 25. Families accounted for 45 percent of attendance. The movie grossed $6.7 million in IMAX, and 3D showtimes represented 35 percent of sales.
Moviegoers awarded Maleficent a strong "A" CinemaScore, and if the film plays out like Oz, Alice in Wonderland and Snow White and the Huntsman, it should wind up between $190 and $200 million.
