Thirty-two years on from Ivan Reitman’s 1984 classic, ‘Ghostbusters’ is back with an all-new, all-female cast of central characters and a new director – Paul Feig, of ‘Bridesmaids’ fame. The fantasy-comedy reboot reunites Feig with stars Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, who are joined by Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon and Chris Hemsworth for the new movie from Columbia Pictures / Sony Pictures Releasing.

Prime Focus World contributed stereo conversion services for key sequences in the movie, delivering approximately 380 shots in total. One of the main sequences PFW worked on was set on the streets of New York City, and sees our heroines battling their way through an army of ghosts as they make their way towards their final encounter with main villain Rowan North.

“Both the challenges and the fun of this sequence come from the visual effects,” said Senior Stereo Supervisor Ben Breckenridge. “The ghosts are comprised of vaporous and particulate effects, and the heroines are attempting to stop them with large proton guns. While it was challenging to place all of these elements in the correct depth, the end result was visually stunning, immersive and just plain fun.”

PFW also delivered the climactic sequence of the movie, in which the Ghostbusters battle Rowan North into a large tunnel-like portal back to the ghosts’ home dimension. The villain has New York enveloped in a frenzy of supernatural activity, and the team was able to utilize the incredible visual effects to create an immersive and enjoyable 3D climax for the movie.

“We used lots of cool 3D effects on ‘Ghostbusters’, including matte breaks,” continued Ben. “In many instances we were able to bring elements outside the top and bottom edges of the screen, so that audiences were literally ducking and dodging proton beams and bits of exploded ghosts. This was the perfect effect for this type of movie, and really added to the fun.”

‘Ghostbusters’ released in the U.S. on July 15, 2016.
