‘Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe’ is a 2015 Chinese action adventure film directed and co-written by Lu Chuan and starring Mark Chao, Jin Chen, Li Feng and Chen Li. Based on Tianxia Bachhang’s 2006 best-selling novel ‘Ghost Blows Out The Light’, the movie was released in China on 30 September 2015 by China Film Co., and grossed RMB 600 million (US $95 million) in its opening week.
The film follows the story of a young soldier, working in China’s snowcapped mountains, who discovers a series of mysterious fossils hidden deep within the mountain caverns following an explosion. What he finds out next will change his life – and human history – forever.
Prime Focus World was called in early in the pre-production phase of the project and was associated with the show throughout its production, providing concept art, storyboards, previz, R&D and VFX work for two of the film’s main sequences. The project was managed by PFW’s Beijing facility, and the work was completed by PFW’s Mumbai VFX team under the supervision of VFX Supervisor Michael Grobe.
Since its release the movie has been garnering many favourable reviews for its VFX work, which has been described as ‘establishing a new benchmark for VFX work in the Chinese film industry and leading Chinese film into a new era of VFX’. Another reviewer commented ‘The VFX is really good in this movie. It has reached the top in the Chinese film industry… and even in the Asian film industry”.
In an interview about the film, director Lu Chuan commented “The VFX companies have helped me a lot to accomplish this film. The final cut of the avalanche sequence [completed by PFW] is almost the same as the concept art.”
‘Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe’ has been a big success in China, making US $14.2 million on its opening day alone and placing it at number 1 in the daily box office.
