At the ripe age of 11, James started experimenting with coding and computer graphics. He received his Engineering Graphic degree in 1994 from Western Michigan University.
He started his career with IBM, and went on to do several years of freelance animation, multimedia, and IT support. In early 2000, James worked as an artist, doing animation, compositing and Technical direction for Digital Dimension. By late 2003, they recognized his incredible value, and he became the head of R&D/Pipeline.
James joined Frantic Films (now Prime Focus VFX) in 2005 as a R&D Developer for particles and fluids. In early 2008, after the acquisition by Prime Focus, he was promoted to the Head of Pipeline for VFX, North America.
